"Gunpla" refers to the plastic model kits that are based off the Gundam anime media franchise founded in 1979. While they have been around for over three decades, they rose to popularity in the last five years. Since then, Gunpla have been a staple amongst hobby enthusiasts whether they follow the Gundam universe or not. Many people love the peace building a model kits brings them in a similar way that many people find peace from building LEGOS.
